Board meeting 8-5-20

Attending:Paul Harris, Vicki, Michelle Jorgensen, Jeff Hill, David Peterson, Justin Bauer,

Vicki: Roseman is scheduling live patient courses again just now. Online offerings are the norm. Checking temps, masks, fewer people. box lunches instead of buffet style. Easy to spread people out. 50/50 courses either online or in person if must be.
less money for online courses but less expense $30 per CE on average across country for online  courses. less charge travel and hotel for speakers. attendance varies on topic. Botox course sold out with a max of 24. No in person courses since March and now just starting again. Hornbrook course cancelled all thru year and starting to book in the fall.
can have a hybrid course with 2 prices for an in person vs online course. many people scared. have an in person offering.  honorarium varies from $200 to a percentage depending on the speaker for an hour. length.

David: Mastertrack program? what to do with Prabu.

Michelle: doing online courses. current course with 45 people enrolled. create engagement during the course. doing a full week course, in the middle of day 3. facebook group. homework assignments each night.
what do people want and need right now? they want CE because they want to learn something new.  will provide the most engagements.
Vicki--can do Zoom room breakout sessions or teams for each course.

Justin: this is new to all of us. this will recur again. we need a model that works. social aspect is important, camraderie. Hiossen has done some lecture based courses for free. how can we do a hands-on portion? self taught. the lecture is great but the hands on is quite important to a practice. Washington AGD has offered many free seminars. how to piggy back. Koerner and Christensen have been doing courses--hands on portion--send you a kit to do at home. Washington had many sponsors.

David: in favor of an in person course. learning to palpate and document for the Prabu course. max of 34 for a hands on course.

For November Prabu Raman course. can bring own person to palpate to social distance from all others. Vicki has breakout rooms joined to main class room with monitors to keep all others spaced, but with only 30 attendees no prob with space.
Nov 6-7 (AGD HOD is Oct 23-25)

Need a plan B for November. myofacial pain and neuromuscular dentistry.

Sept course-removable pros. much interest in digital scanner tech. good review on removable too. mult companies lined up for digital scanning of edent patients. rein in the course and have a bit shorter. some live attendees and many other connected online.
use dental learning live facility. good op filming capacity and film other participants. do a hybrid approach. present 1 case with all the steps and live scanning so everyone can see it. then skip ahead and show all the steps immediately. can do all the steps in 90 min on a live patient. could let people try different locations and have attendees try digital scanning. digital vertical bite.
3rd weekend in Sept.

Board incentive proposal--Active participation on the UAGD board has been light for various positions for some time.  Committee chairs or a committee member often face the daunting task of coordinating courses solo, sometimes several at a time.  This leads to burn out and questioning as to why they volunteer.  Other committee members may not know how best to support these efforts or may forget their important role.
I propose that active board participants can attend UAGD courses for 1/2 price.  Full CE credits/ benefits are included.
Active participation is defined as attendance of at least one board /committee meeting per year and one UAGD course per year and a fulfilled assignment as defined by a member of the presidency or committee chair. Potential assignments/ responsibilities include:
  1. planning, and coordination of a course (speaker scouting and contract, venue arrangement, meal arrangement, or regular course marketing)
  2. a quarterly newsletter or general membership information contact
  3. website maintenance/administration
  4. oversight of student chapter with 2 or more activities per year
  5. financial trustee responsibilities for the UAGD
  6. active membership drives/outreach
  7. legislative advocacy
  8. functioning as state delegate
  9. service in the presidency
Pros: direct, financial incentive for active board participation. stimulus for proactively functioning in a position, encouragement for new board members to volunteer and participate. a reason for committee members to extend help to committee chairs without being asked.
Cons: less course revenue, potential conflict of interest, could be interpreted as "payment" or "salary" with its tax implications.
Board discusssion revised from student rate to 1/2 price.
Another stimulus to serve on the board is to remind MAGDs of need for service for LLSR--can serve on the board to count for points.
