Dr. Frank W. Licari is Dean of Roseman University College of Dental Medicine in South Jordan, Utah and has over 30 years of experience as an educator. As an international consultant, Dr. Licari has worked with over 50 dental schools on curriculum, student competency, accreditation, and faculty development. He is a member of the ADA, ADEA, the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, Utah Dental Association and the Chicago Dental Society, and currently serves as the chair of the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations. He has been recognized with the UIC Distinguished Dental Alumnus Award, Pierre Fauchard Certificate of Merit, memberships in Delta Omega and Omicron Kappa Upsilon, and fellowships with the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.

 Oral Cancer – Research-based on Evidence vs. Evidence-based Research

Kamran Awan, BDS, PhD

1. Identify and correlate the risk factors of oral cancer
2. Based on history and clinical presentation, be able to predict differential diagnosis
3. Recommend investigative procedures to establish a definitive diagnosis

Kamran Awan, BDS, PhD, is an associate professor in the College of Dental Medicine, Roseman University of Health Sciences. He graduated from Baqai Dental College, University of Karachi, Pakistan. He completed his postgraduate training and a doctorate degree in Oral Medicine from King’s College London, United Kingdom. He has served as an academician and researcher in many countries including Pakistan, Malaysia and United Kingdom. Dr. Awan is active in basic and clinical research and his research interests include screening of oral cancer and precancer, developing clinical and laboratory tests to identify at risk subjects to assist in early detection of oral cancer, developing tumor and genetic markers for diagnosis and examining risks of oral cancer in different populations and the delivery of interventional programs directed at cessation of tobacco and areca nut usage.

David Prince, DDS

1. Balancing evidence based dentistry, patient and practitioner values, and clinical experience.
2. Incorporate evidence based dentistry into a dental practice.
3. Effective clinical decision-making even when the news, dental supplier, or shaky science comes knocking.
4. How to tell the difference between solid scientific evidence and questionable scientific claims.

David B. Prince, DDS graduated from Northwestern University Dental School in 1982.  He was in private practice for 17 years in Arizona before moving and beginning a new practice in Utah.  After another 15 years in private practice, he began teaching at Roseman University College of Dental Medicine in 2014.  He is a clinical practice team leader and also teaches practice management to third year dental students.  He is a past president of the Provo-Orem District Dental Society and currently serves as the service director for the LDS Academy of Dentists.  He is a fellow of the International College of Dentists.

 Why Quality Evidence Matters in Healthcare

Joseph Cheever, DDS, MS

1. Understand why randomized controlled trials make great evidence.
2. Understand that much of dental research needs better quality.
3. Understand why biological plausibility is a poor path to follow.  

Dr. Cheever currently serves as Assistant Dean of Clinical Research at Roseman University.  He received his DDS from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1993 and completed a pediatric dentistry residency in 1995 at University of Iowa College of Dentistry.  He has practiced pediatric dentistry in Las Vegas and the Salt Lake area for over twenty years.  He is recognized a fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy.  He is currently serving as a colonel in the United States Army Reserve and is a two-time combat veteran.

Dental Mouthguard Update: Review of Type, Design, and Function

The purpose of this presentation is to review the design of the various mouthguards that are available on the market today. Discussion of specific aspects for each mouthguard will include type, design, function, method of fabrication, accessibility for purchase and cost. 

Typical reasons for athletes not wearing mouthguards include: (1) “It’s not comfortable or doesn’t fit right.” (2) “I can’t speak to my teammates.” (3) “It’s hard to breathe.” and (4) “I can’t drink with it.” Athletes playing in sports such as basketball, soccer, baseball, skateboarding, skiing, etc., often play their sport without dental protection because of these reasons. However, athletes, who play sports such as football, hockey and lacrosse, are forced to wear mouthguards due to rules and regulations. 

A laboratory custom-made mouthguard claims to allow athletes to speak, breathe and drink with comfort. A review of the results of the evidenced-based clinical studies will be discussed. 

Following this presentation, attendees will be able to 

• Discuss the dynamics and changing characteristics of “today’s mouthguards”.
• Understand the association between custom-made mouthguards and the mitigation of head injuries
• Understand how the compliance of mouthguard usage in sports can be increased.

AGD scholarship for the Roseman students the “Utah Academy of General Dentistry Eric Vogel Scholarship”?  Eric was a member, if I am not mistaken, of the AGD.  Perhaps the scholarship could recognize the adage that it is better to give than to receive, which he exemplified.

Decision in Dec 2017 to allocate $1000 to Roseman per year for student activities and 2 $500 scholarships to deserving students as determined by AGD membership, financial need and judged by the Roseman AGD chapter presidency and advisor.

Epic lab help--Dave --they wanted to start a study club on lasers w /dr. Losee a few yrs ago. wanted to charge 2500 per yr. Scott is interested in joining AGD.   the money trail seems obvious here. we're a non-profit org. we give our time, but epic doesnt seem like its all altruistic. who gets paid?  where does the money go?  PACE cert can't have confliuct of interests.

       The UT AGD WAS BUILT FROM ASHES BY VOLUNTEERS WHO PAID FROM THEIR OWN POCKETS TO KEEP THE GROUP GOING IN ORDER TO KEEP IT IN THE BLACK.  YEARS AGO, THE GROUP COULDN'T EVEN COVER OUR OWN COSTS.  WE ARE FINANCIALLY SECURE TODAY BECAUSE OF A GREAT DEAL OF SACRIFICE.  THE INTEREST HAS NEVER BEEN TO MAKE A PROFIT, AND MONEY IN OUR ACCOUNTS HAS NOT REPAID PAST SHORTAGES.  WE HAVE WORKED HARD TO KEEP CE COSTS EXTREMELY LOW FOR MEMBERS.  IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A NON-PROFIT GROUP.  IN PARTNERING WITH OTHER GROUPS, ONE OF THE PREEMINENT CONCERNS IS THAT IT REMAINS FAIR TO MEMBERS.  IN OUR DESIRE TO PAY ALL THE BILLS AND ROUTE MONEY DIRECTLY THRU THE UAGD FOR VARIOUS ACTIVITIES, WE ARE WANTING TO CONTROL THE MONEY TO ENSURE THAT NO ONE IS PROFITING FROM OUR MEMBERS AND THEREBY LOSE THE FINANCIAL TRUST THAT HAS BEEN BUILT THRU THE YEARS.
      EPIC LAB PROPOSED AT THE LAST MASTER TRACK IN NOVEMBER TO HOST A SPECIAL COURSE FOR THE HANDS ON PORTION OF THE ESTHETIC ASSIGNMENT.  THEY PROPOSED OUT OF HAND THAT THE COURSE FEE BE $2500 OF SO.  THIS IS FINE.  HOWEVER, WHEN A COURSE IS SPONSORED BY THE AGD, WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT THE COURSE FEE DOESN'T JUST LAND IN THE POCKET OF SOMEBODY.  IN OTHER WORDS, THAT THE FEE IS REASONABLE TO COVER THE COSTS OF THE COURSE.  THE UAGD WANTS TO RETAIN CONTROL OF THE MONEY TRAIL.  A COURSE CAN BE OFFERED BY ANY GROUP FOR PROFIT, BUT ANYTHING AFFILIATED WITH THE UAGD SHOULD HONOR THIS UNSTATED COMMITTMENT TO OUR MEMBERS.

Roseman student chapter (Dave M); Kevin Lin is president of the student chapter, Dave is the adviser. Request $1,000 per year for chapter functions. They have 38 members.

2017 Dentist of the Year  nominations:  Jim Williamson

Dave M is at capacity with his commitment at Roseman.  Is on the hook for next 2 CE courses but feels like he can't head the CE committee.  Has asked Duane and Ruedi to help at Roseman.  Aaron Ferguson suggested that Dave talk to Harmon (over clubs) at Roseman to ensure that the AGD is a legitimate club at Roseman.  He requested bylaws to submit to the administrative council to be recognized as a club prior to organizing the chapter.

March 2 course at Roseman: (research and evidence-based dentistry).  Frank Licari, Joe Cheever, Dave Prince, Kamran Awan.  No cost for the speakers to the AGD.   All profs at Roseman. split proceeds with Roseman student chapter.

Rose man chapter to be a sub account to the UAGD.  Chapter is a part of our constituency.  Budget is together.  

Aug 31, 2016 Board Meeting

Finances--Lynn-the uagd is a 501c. scott got a letter saying we have an exception from the irs to be tax exempt. Otherwise, we have to prove to the irs we are exempt.  we can't advertise for a profit group to keep our exempt status.  there were papers filed.  we must send a 990 to irs each year explaining income and what is used for to not require a determination letter to continue.  we are included in the national AGD for this umbrella. 26K income 2015. expenses were 22K in 2015.
 Noone on board has looked into other investments other than CDs in past. we have 4 accounts--general, mastership and 2 others.  each account has a low interest savings bond. we'll discuss this again at the next meeting on sept 16.

Spring Regional Meeting-paul. April 28, 2016 5pm after the UDA convention. Region will sponsor. Duane will make arrangements for a room.

Board Positions--was recommended to have 2 year terms. Decided to keep a one year term for now.

Openings on the board-Dan Boston resigned as Mastership program advisor. VP (PresElect), Sec, We need to move a few people around.  Andy pres for next year. Scott will look within the board to fill the presidency and new recruits can fill in the committee vacancies.

Health insurance proposal--scott stucki wanted to explore ways to apply for group health care and use the larger uagd group. there are 5 questions he needs answered to determine interest. scott would like everyone to at least answer the questions in the newsletter to the contact there.
