Discussion of Roseman donations of 2000/yr done last year.  1K for student activities and 2 $500 scholarships to deserving students in the name of Dr. Eric Vogel.  All present thought these were appropriate expenditures and OK to continue.

Jason to serve as Delegate at HOD in November.  Has been asked to serve as RD in Wally's place after 2 terms.  Board will need to fill other Presidency positions and replace Jason as sec.

Mastership-Dave would like to schedule a presentation day/weekend.  presentations should be emailed for judging prior to the event so that passing is assured and only a  formality.

The Roseman student chapter will host Dr. Chad Goeckeritz for a course on Esthetic Dentistry on Thursday, March 29, 2018 form 5:30-8:30pm.  We invite all to attend.

May 4-5, 2018 Oral Surgery Update

Utah AGD Spring Mastertrack CE, 16 hours!

Oral Surgery for the General Practice! 

We are excited to have Aspire Surgical presenting.

Dr. Fullmer, Dr. Stosich, and Dr. Ryser will be presenting Oral Surgery for the General Practice. We are lucky to have them join us for this 2 days course. It will cover 16 hours of CE in Oral Surgery. The topics will cover everything from atraumatic extraction techniques, biopsy proceedures and techniques, single tooth implants, bone grafting for the general practice, and then finish up with indepth oral surgery reconstruction. This course is designed with a focus on hand on learning and will allow those attending to practice the skills hands on during the course.

Dr. Fullmer is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is dedicated to providing the best surgical practices for his patients. He achieves this goal by constantly continuing his education, receiving additional training, and practicing evidence-based dentistry and medicine.Dr. Fullmer was born and raised in the greater Salt Lake area. He attended the University of Utah and earned a bachelor’s degree in medical biology. Afterward, he attended the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. While in dental school, Dr. Fullmer’s exposure to oral surgery lead him to pursue post-graduate specialty training. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the Cook County and Northwestern Hospitals in Chicago, Illinois.

While in his residency, Dr. Fullmer gained specialty training in wisdom teeth removal, bone grafting, IV anesthesia, dental implants, surgical treatment of oral pathology, maxillofacial trauma, corrective jaw surgery, maxillofacial reconstruction, and surgical treatment of TMJ disorders. Dr. Fullmer also has a special interest and training in arthroscopic TMJ surgery.

In his spare time, Dr. Fullmer enjoys being with his family, hiking, golfing, camping, skiing, and snowboarding.

Dr. Stosich is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He first received his bachelor’s degree in zoology from Idaho State University. From there, he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Creighton Dental School in Omaha, Nebraska, and continued his education at the University of Nebraska Medical Center School of Medicine, where he completed his MD and a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery. During this time, Dr. Stosich also served as Chief Resident in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in addition to completing a general surgery internship. Though a one-year rotation in anesthesia, he was trained in the full management of using anesthesia in the operating room, as well as deep sedation. Dr. Stosich uses this training and experience to ensure that your surgery is as comfortable as possible. In addition to excelling at his education, Dr. Stosich received many awards and scholarships throughout his schooling and career in oral surgery. Currently, Dr. Stosich is the Division Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Riverton Hospital.

Because of his driving passion for improving others’ lives through oral surgery, Dr. Stosich is affiliated with six hospitals in the Salt Lake area, responding to trauma calls and gaining extensive experience in skeletal reconstruction of the face. His practice includes a full scope of oral and facial surgery, with specific expertise ranging from dental implant surgery and wisdom teeth removal to corrective jaw surgery and facial surgery. This expertise includes techniques for bone grafting; sinus lifts; soft tissue rejuvenation; smart liposuction for the face and neck; lifts for the brow, eyes, chin, neck, and face; and rhinoplasty.

Dr. AJ Stosich is artistically talented, a characteristic that adds to his competency as a facial surgeon. His genuine compassion and empathy for others brings the opportunity for open, frank, and respectful discussion, allowing his patients to place full trust in his knowledge, skill, and background. With his “Live Life to the Fullest!” attitude, Dr. Stosich listens to his patients’ concerns and advises them on how they can enhance the quality of their life.

Dr. Mark Ryser grew up in the Salt Lake area and is a second-generation oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He attended Brigham Young University for his undergraduate studies, followed by his dental training at the University of Louisville, where he graduated summa cum laude in 2001.

Dr. Ryser completed medical school in conjunction with postgraduate training at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. After receiving his Doctorate in Medicine (M.D.), he completed a surgical internship in general surgery at Charity Hospital. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Louisiana State

Dr. Mark Ryser grew up in the Salt Lake area and is a second-generation oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He attended Brigham Young University for his undergraduate studies, followed by his dental training at the University of Louisville, where he graduated summa cum laude in 2001.

Dr. Ryser completed medical school in conjunction with postgraduate training at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Louisiana State University, one of the top programs in the country, in 2007.

Dr. Ryser is currently completing certification requirements to become a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His residency provided extensive training and exposure to all facets of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including dental implants, dentoalveolar, orthognathic and temporomandibular joint surgery, bone grafting, oral pathology, and facial cosmetic surgery.

Additionally, Dr. Ryser has received multiple awards at both national and international meetings for his research and publications in the fields of dental implants and craniofacial biology. He practices the entire scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with particular interests in dental implants. This includes: recombinant bone morphogenetic protein grafting, complex CT scan implant surgery planning and peri-implant soft tissue augmentation. Other areas of special interest include orthognathic surgery as well as facial and peri-oral cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Frank W. Licari is Dean of Roseman University College of Dental Medicine in South Jordan, Utah and has over 30 years of experience as an educator. As an international consultant, Dr. Licari has worked with over 50 dental schools on curriculum, student competency, accreditation, and faculty development. He is a member of the ADA, ADEA, the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, Utah Dental Association and the Chicago Dental Society, and currently serves as the chair of the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations. He has been recognized with the UIC Distinguished Dental Alumnus Award, Pierre Fauchard Certificate of Merit, memberships in Delta Omega and Omicron Kappa Upsilon, and fellowships with the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.

 Oral Cancer – Research-based on Evidence vs. Evidence-based Research

Kamran Awan, BDS, PhD, is an associate professor in the College of Dental Medicine, Roseman University of Health Sciences. He graduated from Baqai Dental College, University of Karachi, Pakistan. He completed his postgraduate training and a doctorate degree in Oral Medicine from King’s College London, United Kingdom. He has served as an academician and researcher in many countries including Pakistan, Malaysia and United Kingdom. Dr. Awan is active in basic and clinical research and his research interests include screening of oral cancer and precancer, developing clinical and laboratory tests to identify at risk subjects to assist in early detection of oral cancer, developing tumor and genetic markers for diagnosis and examining risks of oral cancer in different populations and the delivery of interventional programs directed at cessation of tobacco and areca nut usage.

David Prince, DDS

1. Balancing evidence based dentistry, patient and practitioner values, and clinical experience.

4. How to tell the difference between solid scientific evidence and questionable scientific claims.

David B. Prince, DDS graduated from Northwestern University Dental School in 1982.  He was in private practice for 17 years in Arizona before moving and beginning a new practice in Utah.  After another 15 years in private practice, he began teaching at Roseman University College of Dental Medicine in 2014.  He is a clinical practice team leader and also teaches practice management to third year dental students.  He is a past president of the Provo-Orem District Dental Society and currently serves as the service director for the LDS Academy of Dentists.  He is a fellow of the International College of Dentists.

 Why Quality Evidence Matters in Healthcare

Joseph Cheever, DDS, MS

1. Understand why randomized controlled trials make great evidence.
2. Understand that much of dental research needs better quality.
3. Understand why biological plausibility is a poor path to follow.  

Dr. Cheever currently serves as Assistant Dean of Clinical Research at Roseman University.  He received his DDS from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1993 and completed a pediatric dentistry residency in 1995 at University of Iowa College of Dentistry.  He has practiced pediatric dentistry in Las Vegas and the Salt Lake area for over twenty years.  He is recognized a fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy.  He is currently serving as a colonel in the United States Army Reserve and is a two-time combat veteran.

Dental Mouthguard Update: Review of Type, Design, and Function

The purpose of this presentation is to review the design of the various mouthguards that are available on the market today. Discussion of specific aspects for each mouthguard will include type, design, function, method of fabrication, accessibility for purchase and cost. 

Typical reasons for athletes not wearing mouthguards include: (1) “It’s not comfortable or doesn’t fit right.” (2) “I can’t speak to my teammates.” (3) “It’s hard to breathe.” and (4) “I can’t drink with it.” Athletes playing in sports such as basketball, soccer, baseball, skateboarding, skiing, etc., often play their sport without dental protection because of these reasons. However, athletes, who play sports such as football, hockey and lacrosse, are forced to wear mouthguards due to rules and regulations. 

A laboratory custom-made mouthguard claims to allow athletes to speak, breathe and drink with comfort. A review of the results of the evidenced-based clinical studies will be discussed. 

Following this presentation, attendees will be able to 

• Discuss the dynamics and changing characteristics of “today’s mouthguards”.
• Understand the association between custom-made mouthguards and the mitigation of head injuries
• Understand how the compliance of mouthguard usage in sports can be increased.
